Original antiques, rich materials and authentic attention to detail bring to life the medieval past of this unique house. Persian rugs reminiscent of the Crusades cover stone-flagged floors and the warm colours of heavy fabrics and natural paints evoke the age of Chivalry. Leaded lights filter softly coloured light inside.
The sitting room window seats look directly over the moat; you can sit and watch the heron or feed the resident carp from here or relax on the comfortable Knole sofas soaking up the warmth of the logburner which will have been lit for your arrival in cool weather. A door from this room gives onto the terrace, ideal for breakfast, an al fresco lunch or for sipping champagne as the suns sets over the waterlilies.
Inside again, the dining room fireplace is stocked with logs and there is an antique dining table which will seat eight though further seating can be arranged to accommodate upto sixteen. A tapestry now takes the place of the canopy where the owner of the house once presided.
The traditional cream Aga is the heart of the kitchen which has been designed to reflect architectural elements in the house, with solid oak cupboards and worktop, and a hand-made floor inspired by tiles in Worcester Cathedral.
The bedrooms offer sumptuous luxury, each with a different medieval-style bed:- a four-poster, a hanging bed, a half-tester. Elaborate drapery, antique chests and specially designed pavilion wardrobes in the Solar bedroom complete the picture.
Modern conveniences, however, have not been forgotten; each room or suite has its own bath or shower room. Two have both. Kitchen equipment includes a microwave and food processor, larder fridge and large freezer. There is also a separate larder and utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer.
Dating from the 1430s, The Woodhouse has been painstakingly restored by its owners using traditional methods and materials: Herefordshire oak, from the same forests as the restoration of Windsor Castle, wattle and daub and naturally pigmented paints. Possibly unique architecturally, the property is found in many publications, on English Heritage’s Images of England website, in newspaper articles and on BBC Radio 4. It has also been seen during 2009 in 25 Beautiful Homes, Cotswold Life Worcestershire Life and an Italian magazine and on BBC2's Escape to the Country. This is your opportunity to experience one of Herefordshire’s most historic houses..
