BBC2 Escape to the Country

BBC2’s Escape to the Country was aired recently - the episode set in the Ledbury area, and we were somewhat relieved that we were not contacted by the BBC and did not appear in the programme, though we understand that Herefordshire’s very own vodka was included. However, we e-mailed Suzanne and Danny, the people about whom the programme was made, and they have told us that the broadcast was an abbreviated one for the 45 minute slot and during the summer a longer version of an hour will be shown, so perhaps we shall make that one!

New Games

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

This year has seen us put a number of new board games into the cottages, including Articulate. What better way of spending the darker and cooler evenings of Autumn and Winter than by drawing the curtains and sitting in front of the flickering flames of a woodburning stove with a glass of wine, a few nibbles and the Scrabble or a pack of cards?

New Award

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

The Woodhouse Farm Cottages added to its list of awards this week at the 2009 Heart of England (West Midlands) awards. Held at the ICC in Birmingham, the evening was hosted by Nick Owen and Suzanne Virdee from Midlands Today, who needed an award themselves for unflinchingly smiling, kissing and having their photos taken with so many people. Another member of Premier Cottages won the Gold award, (they were our runners up from last year) and we won Highly Commended, with yet another Premier Cottage member. Out of the four shortlisted, three were from Herefordshire - all members of Premier Cottages! What greater proof could there be that this organisation - an owners co-operative - takes quality seriously?

Escape to the Country!

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

Talkback Thames TV came to see us last week to film as part of their series Escape to the Country for BBC2. Danny and Suzanne from Sutton Coldfield are hoping to move into Herefordshire and would like to set up some holiday cottages. Talkback TV identified us as suitable people for them to visit, so that we could show them our award-winning cottages and discuss with them things which they ought to know before starting. It was very interesting  to meet them both and entertaining for us all to be “miked up” and filmed from various different angles saying the same things, and of course, we all found how hard it is to be able to appear relaxed and natural in front of  a camera! Suzanne and Danny love this county, love what we have done here and have promised to contact us again when they are nearer to moving. The show is due to be aired some time between November and January, and we will be letting everyone know as soon as we are told ourselves. In the meantime, why don’t you escape to the country and see for yourselves what we have to offer?

Festivals

Monday, June 1st, 2009

It’s that time of the year again. The Hay Festival has just finished - see link - http://www.hayfestival.com/portal/index.aspx?skinid=1&localesetting=en-GB                         with its wonderful line-up of interesting people, from Desmond Tutu to the David Starkey. We always seem to miss it, but there are other festivals coming up for you to enjoy.

This year’s Ledbury poetry Festival (July 3rd - 12th)  - see link - http://www.poetry-festival.com/Pages/2009programme.html has plenty to entertain you, with Roger McGough, Ruth Padel and Joan Bakewell among others. The events include ones on Ancient Egyptian poetry and the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, walks (a John Masefield walk - his family is still based in Ledbury, and an Architecture walk) folk music and jazz and are held in a variety of venues including  Hellens, a medieval house a few minutes from Ledbury, owned by the Munthe family. Described by Andrew Motion as the best poetry festival in the country, the Ledbury Poetry Festival numbers many award-winning writers in its line-up, including the Booker Prize-winning novelist and poet Ben Okri and has an international flavour. There should be something for everyone - we still have availability in Barn Croft from July 3rd - 8th at the time of writing!
