It’s that time of the year again. The Hay Festival has just finished - see link - http://www.hayfestival.com/portal/index.aspx?skinid=1&localesetting=en-GB with its wonderful line-up of interesting people, from Desmond Tutu to the David Starkey. We always seem to miss it, but there are other festivals coming up for you to enjoy.
This year’s Ledbury poetry Festival (July 3rd - 12th) - see link - http://www.poetry-festival.com/Pages/2009programme.html has plenty to entertain you, with Roger McGough, Ruth Padel and Joan Bakewell among others. The events include ones on Ancient Egyptian poetry and the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, walks (a John Masefield walk - his family is still based in Ledbury, and an Architecture walk) folk music and jazz and are held in a variety of venues including Hellens, a medieval house a few minutes from Ledbury, owned by the Munthe family. Described by Andrew Motion as the best poetry festival in the country, the Ledbury Poetry Festival numbers many award-winning writers in its line-up, including the Booker Prize-winning novelist and poet Ben Okri and has an international flavour. There should be something for everyone - we still have availability in Barn Croft from July 3rd - 8th at the time of writing!
